  • 1. Back in the 1930’s the original boardwalk was wooden.

  • 2. In the 1940’s, there were plans to expand the boardwalk, but they were delayed by World War II.

  • 3. It was also in the 1940’s, that the boardwalk was upgraded to concrete.

  • 4. Before the expansion could be started, the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk was destroyed by Hurricane Hazel in 1954.

  • 5. The original plans for the current boardwalk were submitted to the city council on August 14th, 2007.

  • 6. Construction started on the new boardwalk in September of 2009.

  • 7. It cost nearly $6.4 million to build.

  • 8. The current boardwalk was built by M.B Kahn Construction Co., Inc..

  • 9. The Myrtle Beach Boardwalk is approximately 1.4 miles long. Starting from 15th Ave N in Myrtle Beach and ending at 2nd Avenue Pier.

  • 10. The city of Myrtle Beach contributed 600 palmetto trees to enhance the landscaping that surrounds the boardwalk.

  • 11. 300,000 nails were used during construction.

  • 12. The city also contributed 50,000 beach grass seedlings to the boardwalk project.

  • 13. Construction workers used 550,000 screws when building the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk and Promenade.

  • 14. The Myrtle Beach Boardwalk & Promenade was built using 770,000 board-feet of lumber.

  • 15. Officially opened to the general public in May of 2010. There was a ribbon-cutting ceremony held on May 15th, 2010.

  • 16. The Myrtle Beach Boardwalk is 4.3 miles shorter than the Atlantic City Boardwalk (measures 5.5 miles long), which is the longest and oldest (opened June 26th, 1870) boardwalk in the world.
